Dipping our Toes in the Jordan

July 10, 2019July 2, 2019 bethanygwb

We were so excited to finally announce last week that we are adopting! But as we begin this journey, we want to be honest about the hard part—the fear of the unknowns. How long will we have to wait? What will our relationship with the birth mother be like? Will we have a failed match?… Continue reading Dipping our Toes in the Jordan

We’re Adopting!

July 3, 2019July 3, 2019 bethanygwb

It seems surreal to type those words: we’re adopting! It’s a desire that my husband, Joseph, and I have had for so long, and we know that this is just the beginning of a long journey. Even as I type this post, I am completely humbled and amazed at the working of God to bring… Continue reading We’re Adopting!

When God Is Our Father

June 14, 2019August 31, 2021 bethanygwb

I remember the exact place I was sitting when I heard a quote that transformed my understanding of God. If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. J. I. Packer It was in… Continue reading When God Is Our Father

After a long day, I wash my face, brush my teeth, put on my pajamas, and drop into the armchair in the corner of our bedroom. I wearily pick up my prayer journal and pen, my fingers releasing all the anxieties weighing on me from the day. When the Israelites returned from exile to the ruined city of Jerusalem, God commanded Nehemiah to lead the people in rebuilding the wall around it. You would think God would send the best, most experienced craftsmen in the empire to repair the once mighty wall. Ever since I became a mother, I’ve taken seriously the Shema—the comprehensive faith statement in Deuteronomy 6:5-7. Since I felt the first baby kicks in my belly, I’ve prayed my family would love the Lord in everything we do. “I need some space,” my daughter often cries, waiting for permission to go to her room. Sometimes she’s frustrated I didn’t cut her PBJ correctly. Other times, she’s sad her new treasure box toy broke. Most times she’s angry her brother won’t share. While it’s often at inconvenient times she wants to abandon a play date or family reading time, I’m thankful that she can recognize when her emotions are just too much. When she needs to step away rather than explode.
