Not Created to be Alone

September 23, 2022September 22, 2022 bethanygwb

I pull into our church parking lot (miraculously on time) and park in the space marked “Preschoolers with One Parent.” I pull out the stroller and load it with two diaper bags, my purse, and a thermos of (already cold) coffee. I strategize which child to unbuckle first based on who is most likely to… Continue reading Not Created to be Alone

Have You Tried Restarting It?

April 29, 2022April 27, 2022 bethanygwb

A few weeks ago, I spent two and a half hours chatting with three different Apple support staff. I read no less than a dozen how-to articles from various tech websites. I even called my PC-loving husband with a last-ditch request for help. The first question was always the same: “Have you tried restarting it?”… Continue reading Have You Tried Restarting It?

April 2022 Adoption Update

April 20, 2022April 27, 2022 bethanygwb

Seven months have passed since our last adoption update, and we have seen eighteen info summaries and shown our profile nine times. While those may seem like just numbers, each represents another time God has answered our longing for another child with “not yet.” We ask that you continue to pray for us, specifically, that… Continue reading April 2022 Adoption Update

Why Duct Tape

August 30, 2013March 26, 2016 bethanygwb

I became a Christian at a young age, but prayer was always a mystery to me. Other than saying short, rehearsed prayers at mealtimes, I never seemed to know the words to say, though I was frequently told to "just pray about it." I went through elementary school mimicking the prayers of my parents, but… Continue reading Why Duct Tape

I’ve becoming increasingly aware of my addiction to my smartphone and even more disenchanted with what it can actually offer for me. I’ve tried implementing tips and tricks for reducing screen time, but I’ve realized that I can’t hack my way into a healthier relationship with technology. The idolatry runs deeper in my heart. I often idealize what a perfect prayer time should look like. The first rays of sun peak through my window and spotlights the chair in the corner of my bedroom. I sit with coffee in one hand and my prayer journal in another. The flame of a soy candle next to me rises along with my thanksgiving and requests. I am peaceful, unhurried, and focused—preparing my mind and heart for the day ahead. On this ideal morning, I’m not interrupted by knocks on the bedroom door or cries for pancakes. I continue in prayer until I am finished, then slowly begin moving into the rhythms of my day.

At the start of each new year, I spend a day packing away our nativity set, Christmas tree, and evergreen wreath. I recycle the remains of wrapping paper and toss the leftovers from Christmas brunch. Wiping away the last of the glittery holiday dust, I place a new goal planner and colorful array of Sharpie pens on our kitchen table. I inhale the hopeful tranquility of a new year and begin drafting my new year’s resolutions. While I normally hate ice breaker questions, I love contemplating my answer to one question: “What superpower would you like to have?” If I were honest, my answer would be, “All of them.” I would want to be fast as the Flash to complete my household chores more quickly. I would want to read minds like Professor X so I could immediately know the needs of my toddler. I would want to be strong as Captain Marvel so I wouldn’t have to ask for help opening a jar of pickles.
