Love Is

February 18, 2022April 27, 2022 bethanygwb

At 6:41 a.m., love is patient. He is patient with me as I press “snooze” on my phone alarm once, then twice, finally a third time. He waits as I check my email, scroll social media, and sip my coffee before finally pulling out his Word. He does not hold my tardiness against me but… Continue reading Love Is

The Lord is my Shepherd

January 21, 2022January 19, 2022 bethanygwb

My hands gripped the steering wheel, my mouth was pulled taut, and my eyes squinted to discern the lines on the interstate through sheets of rain. I heard the peaceful breathing of my sleeping children in the backseat, blissfully unaware of the terror seizing my heart as I drove through minute after minute of pouring… Continue reading The Lord is my Shepherd

Remembering God’s Faithfulness in 2021

December 29, 2021December 13, 2021 bethanygwb

I’m a word person. My favorite games are Scrabble and Bananagrams, and I have a thesaurus app on my phone. I love to read and write, and my husband probably gets tired of all the words that pour out of my mouth. So it’s of no surprise that I’m also one of those people who… Continue reading Remembering God’s Faithfulness in 2021

Confession in Motherhood

November 12, 2021November 10, 2021 bethanygwb

On a whim the other day, I asked my three-year-old daughter, “What does mommy say a lot?” I hoped her answer would be something like, “I love you,” or “You are my precious treasure,” or even better, some profound Gospel truth. Her blue-gray eyes gazed at mine while she pondered my odd question, then she… Continue reading Confession in Motherhood

Absolute Futility

October 29, 2021October 11, 2021 bethanygwb

“‘Absolute futility,’ says the Teacher. ‘Absolute futility. Everything is futile’” (Ecclesiastes 1:2, CSB). The words from my morning quiet time (that had unfortunately been cut short) echoed through my mind as I stood in a long line, tapping the strap of my purse and straining to glimpse what was happening at the front of the… Continue reading Absolute Futility

When I Am Afraid

October 22, 2021October 21, 2021 bethanygwb

Every October, it would take a little longer for my parents to take me to kindergarten. The extra minute or two delay began when our neighbors at the end of our street covered their small yard with every kind of Halloween decoration. Plastic gravestones lined the driveway. White ghosts swung from the oak tree. Fake… Continue reading When I Am Afraid

Approved and Waiting

September 25, 2021 bethanygwb

On New Year’s Eve 2019, we had begun preparing our adoption profile book after a long six-month home study process for domestic adoption. I wasn’t feeling well and wanted to blame it on the rich holiday food, but on a hunch, I took a pregnancy test. 2020 began with a big surprise, we were pregnant… Continue reading Approved and Waiting

Lessons from Daniel Tiger

September 17, 2021September 17, 2021 bethanygwb

“Grown-ups come back.” “Find a way to play together.” “If you have to go potty, stop and go right away.” If you’re currently a parent of toddlers, you will know the melodies that accompany the lyrics above from our favorite friendly jungle animal. Each day, my daughter jumps out of her bed after naptime—excited for… Continue reading Lessons from Daniel Tiger

The Fear of Bad News

September 3, 2021August 31, 2021 bethanygwb

“We got a few updates,” my husband begins as he walks through our bedroom door after his late-night conference call with his Army Reserves unit. “Are you getting deployed?” I blurt out the words before he reaches the bed. My heartbeat hammers and my fists clench, anxious for him to answer my question.   He… Continue reading The Fear of Bad News

A View from My Front Porch

July 23, 2021August 31, 2021 bethanygwb

Last summer, I spent each suffocating quarantine morning squeezing my pregnant body into a bright blue lawn chair. Like the rest of the pandemic experience, it was miserable, but I made do. Yet as soon as I caught the scent of changing seasons this past March, I drove to a local outdoor store and bought… Continue reading A View from My Front Porch

☘️Christ with me…as I awake to children up before the sunrise I sat in the waiting room of the urgent care, holding a crimson wad of tissues to my 5-year-old daughter’s chin. By some miracle, this was the first time in 5 years of parenting that we rushed to the urgent care in need of stitches (though thankfully it just had to be glued). I gently turn the knob to close the nursery door, holding my breath and waiting for my daughter to cry out again. These are the days…
